There is a popular teaching among the sages of Israel that we are like a fish and the Lord is like water. A fish lives and breathes in the water. It is completely surrounded by the water and cannot move without the water. The fish is totally dependent upon the water, for life, and like the fish―we cannot live without the Lord. The Lord dwells within and without, all around us, and we are completely dependent upon the Lord, for our life.
One night in a dream: I saw an infant lying on its side, submerged in a pool of water. When I saw the baby, I was alarmed and I wondered if it was alive. Then I could see small air bubbles leaving its nostrils and rising to the surface. I could see a mild rising and falling of the infant’s chest as it breathed. Then the baby made a small movement of its arm. I remembered being moved because the child was able to live in the water. When I woke up, after this dream, I remembered the teaching of the sages.
One day the Lord said to me, “Imagine that I am close to you and my body is stepping into yours, my hands and my feet are with yours.” As the Lord spoke, I could see a vision of a man standing close behind me, and then he stepped inside my own person, so that we became as one. We are each like this, you and I. The Lord is very close to all of us. The Lord sees what we see and he feels what we feel. The Lord knows our thoughts and our words, even before we do. The Lord knows the environment we live in and our circumstances. He knows our desires and our fears. There is not anything that the Lord does not already know about each one of us.
There is a popular saying among Christians, “I can do all things through Christ.” But the truth is that the Lord can do all things through us, if we are willing to submit to him.
Try to imagine the possibility of all of the good that could be accomplished in the world, If we understood the Lord and were as close to him, as he is to us!
