“... because the kingdom of God is within you.”
Luke 17:21 (NIV)
One day, when I was walking by Central Park, in New York City; I saw a young man who was frustrated and swearing. Suddenly, he stopped and turned around and began threatening someone else behind him; however, no one was there. Another man nearby, began making fun of him, because he seemed to be out of his mind. Because I understood the spiritual battle that the young man was enduring; I felt deeply sorry, and I could not help but feel compassion for him.
If you have never experienced spiritual warfare; then you could not possibly comprehend the confusion, embarrassment, fear, pain, or sorrow that one suffers; when they are truly attacked by a demon. As difficult as it may be to overcome a spiritual battle; this experience may also provide a unique blessing, because if you can hear the voice of demons, you may also have the ability of developing a closer and deeper relationship with the Lord. This is possible, because you can hear the spiritual world that dwells just beyond the veil. Several years ago, a movie was released called, “Last of the Mohicans,” directed by Michael Mann. The story takes place during the colonial era and the main character is a Mohican Indian. In one scene, he enters another Indian camp and seeks to liberate three prisoners. As he enters the camp and while he is trying to approach the chief; several warriors attack him, one after the other, and each of them assault and inflict him with serious blows. The Mohican submits to each of the warriors attacks and never retaliates; after each blow, he restores his equilibrium, and returns his focus to the chief, as he approaches the center of the camp. This struggle is very similar to our own, when we seek to approach the throne of God; except we are not able to see the demons, while they assault us. Satan is very jealous and he will stop just short of nothing, in order to prevent us from drawing near to the Lord. So when you begin to earnestly seek the Lord; you will find yourself attacked, and the closer you come, the more severe the attacks will be. Satan knows his time is limited and the end of time is near. Now more than ever, his jealousy rages and his actions are more destructive. It is for this reason that it's so important to study the Word of God, learn the commandments, and obey them.
Heaven, earth, and man were all created with the same principalities, powers, and dominions. As it is in heaven, so it is on earth, and within man. Within heaven and on earth; there are leaders of many and leaders of a few, and some of them have more power and authority than others. In the news from time to time, you will hear an awful story about a man or a woman who has killed someone. When they are asked why they did this, sometimes they will respond, “Because God told me to.” Because they lacked the ability to distinguish between the Spirit of the Lord or Satan; they truly believed that it was the Lord who spoke to them. In the Word of God we are warned to be very careful, because Satan has the ability to deceive us, and pretend to be like the light.
(2 Corinthians 11:14)
I know that when the Lord is angry, sometimes he will speak sarcastically, and is quite intimidating. The Spirit of the Lord’s voice becomes altered in the same manner that ours does, when we are angry and become vexed with someone else. His voice changes and reaches a different decibel, with a different tone. Because the Lord and Satan possess powerful spirits, it is not unusual for someone to misunderstand which spirit is communicating with them. This is why we are warned to be strong in the Word of God, so that when we hear a spiritual voice, we may be able to distinguish whether it originates from the Spirit of the Lord or a demonic spirit. If what we hear lines up with the Word of God and is truthful and we are not enticed to break a commandment, than it is the Lord. However, if it does not, it is Satan or another fallen spirit, who is trying to mislead us. When the Lord is angry with you and he wants you to recognize your sins, so that you might repent, his voice can be quite harsh. This is because the Lord wants you to understand the full weight and measure of your sins and consider what the consequences of your actions may have been on someone else.
Among Christians, I have heard people say, “Satan is attacking me.” They believed Satan was harassing them, because of a sin they have committed in their past. Remember, Satan is the father of all liars, so if what you hear is truthful and you’re reminded of something you have done in your past; than this could be the Spirit of the Lord, who is trying to lead you to repentance. If not for this reason; sometimes, when we are being judgmental toward someone else and unmindful of our humanness, the Lord may remind us of our previous shortcomings.
Within the Islamic faith, it is taught that each one of us experiences an internal *jihad and that we must learn to fight for righteousness. In this, they are correct. Each of us, to one degree or another, experiences a form of spiritual battle, within us. However, if you are a person constantly consumed by the affairs of this world and you’re always running, always working, always gathering, and you never sit still; you may not experience this war. But understand this: A battle is in vain when the war has already been won. If you have never experienced spiritual warfare; this may be because you have already lost the battle, because Satan does not have to attack someone, whom he has already conquered.
*A jihad is a holy war between good and evil.
